Emily Ballus
I am Name: Emily Ballus
Age: 47
Occupation: Executive Director, Miracle Mile Improvement District
Town in which you live: Stockton
Where I’m from: originally North Carolina
How long I’ve lived in San Joaquin County: 3 years and 2 months
What I like most about San Joaquin County: The people and the weather
The people who mean the most to me: My family and friends
Latest accomplishments: Finished one more class for my doctorate
A key event in my life and the impact it had on me: Being Greek and growing up in North Carolina. Some thought we were exotic, others just inferior. My father feared we would face the discrimination he had, so he and my mother instilled in my brother and me hard work, integrity, compassion, and spirituality so we could surmount any obstacle as well as have the confidence to stand up for what’s right rather than what’s popular.
The things that make me the happiest: Being with my significant other, Lothar, and my family
One thing I want to be sure to do while I am still able: Invent something
Hobbies: Reading, making artful things, working with animals
Quote I try to live by: To be rather than to seem – NC state motto
How others see me: Kind, firm, advocate, stoic
Pet peeve: Brown-nosers
Favorite dessert: Chocolate chip ice cream
My pet: Kukla (which means “doll” in Greek),my rescued short-hair tabby
Favorite president and why: George Washington, for leading a somewhat ragtag American army over the British in his pre-presidency, his integrity and modesty, and his wariness of separate political parties which he felt help divide, not unite, Americans
One thing that would help make this nation better: Less egotism and more altruism
