Joelle Gomez
I am Name: Joelle Gomez
Age: 41
Occupation: Executive Director for the Women’s Center of San Joaquin County
Town in which you live: Stockton
Where I’m from: Lockeford
How long I’ve lived in San Joaquin County: My family moved to San Joaquin County when I was 9 years old. I have been commuting to Stockton from San Ramon for the past eight years until recently buying a home here in Stockton! Now I feel like I’m home.
What I like most about San Joaquin County: Hands-down, the people in San Joaquin County are the most genuine, generous, and intelligent people. We have rich agriculture land which lends itself to great wine tasting and country drives.
The people who mean the most to me: My family is my strength and inspiration. I talk to my mom nearly every day. My daughters are certainly my greatest accomplishment, and are the reason why I’ve dedicated my career to preventing violence against women. I am fortunate to have found the love of my life, who inspires me to follow my dreams.
Latest accomplishments: In 2008, I was named Woman of the Year by Assemblyman Greg Aghazarian. I was also inducted into the Mexican American Hall of Fame in the same year. I am humbled by the acknowledgements.
A key event in my life and the impact it had on me: In 1992 my dad, Paul Gomez, died suddenly from a massive heart attack at the age of 58. He was a remarkable dad and mentor. He instilled in me a strong work ethic, being sincere, finding the good in everyone and giving your all, no matter what. He would always tell me, “be happy first; everything else will fall in line.”
The things that make me the happiest: Showing people they matter, spending time with my daughters, hanging out with my best friends, eating beef jerky, Seattle and laughing.
One thing I want to be sure to do while I am still able: Learn to salsa and ballroom dance.
Hobbies: Traveling. I love it. I’ve traveled to 14 countries and wish to see much more of our world.
Quote I try to live by: “What do we live for if not to make life less difficult for each other?” – George Eliot
Favorite dessert: New York cheesecake
One thing that would help make this nation better: More volunteerism. Life is all about helping each other out.
