Fashion is about expressing your own personal style, whether it be classic, trendy, bohemian, minimalist or some eclectic combination that is purely your own.
And you don’t have to spend a lot of money to look great. Today’s fashionistas are increasingly turning to thrift stores, consignment shops and rummage sales to score great finds at a fraction of original retail prices. In addition to saving money, shopping for recycled clothing is environmentally sound. Interesting pieces can be combined in fresh, new ways to create a look you won’t find in the department stores.

The women of the Junior League of San Joaquin County (formerly Junior Aid of Stockton) have elevated the idea of a rummage sale to practically an art form. Almost annually for the past 55 years, members have transformed 21,000 square feet of space at the fairgrounds into a shopping venue like no other. Merchandise is carefully sorted and organized by category. In addition to gently-used fashions for men, women and children, the savvy shopper can also pick up beautiful home furnishings, accessories, sports equipment, toys and books.

Each year, several thousand shoppers attend Junior League’s signature event, hoping to take advantage of quality goods at bargain prices. Funds raised from these sales are given back to the community in the form of grants. The organization has served the Stockton community since 1927 and has given over $2.5 million dollars to non-profit agencies. Preparation for the rummage sale takes place throughout the year.

Members collect and sort donated goods, and spend time getting to know one another better in the process.
A peek through the storage facility for this year’s sale revealed a treasure trove of possibilities. Set an inspired table with colorful linens, unique dishes and a whimsical centerpiece.

Repaint a cast-off chair a bright color. Pair a wide leather belt with an oversized sweater and vintage handbag. Create a Halloween costume that will steal the show. Cost-conscious brides can even purchase a never-worn gown. All you need is a bit of imagination to turn one person’s trash into your own personal treasure.
