Go jump in the lake
When you hear folks say they are going “up to the lake,” most of us presume they are referring to Lake Tahoe. But there is much to explore in the central Sierra Nevada. In the same time it takes to head up to South Lake Tahoe, you can find a peaceful, hidden retreat at an elevation of 5,300 feet – just high enough to escape the heat of the Valley, but still warm enough to enjoy swimming and boating, and evening strolls wearing shorts and a light jacket. Instead of heading north, you just need to travel south.
With its sparkling waters and forested mountains, Shaver Lake is 55 miles northeast of Fresno. The recreational area boosts all water sports, fishing (rainbow trout and kokanee) sailing, hiking and picnicking. It’s a bit far for a day trip, so consider a week’s stay at one of the lakeside campgrounds or a vacation rental.
The camping accommodations are some of the best you’ll find anywhere. Camp Edison “has great lake access and mountain views,” according to Sunset Magazine who named Edison Best Campground in the West.
For the more rustic tent camper, Dorabella Campground is situated on a cozy cove that families have enjoyed for decades. Shaver Lake is also the lakeside home of Camp Chawanakee, one of the finest Boy Scout camps in California.
It is also the gateway to many high-sierra lakes and “off-the-beaten-path” destinations such as Dinkey Creek and Camp Sierra – where you can find some great sliding rocks and dipping pools.
The Village, a few miles south of the Lake, is oddly quaint with a variety of interesting boutiques and many dining options. When tired of campfire cooking, a quick trip into the village is a welcome break.
Favorite stops include burgers and hot dogs at the Hungry Hut, to the most amazing prime rib at the Trading Post. A few new additions and must-see stops include the Central Sierra Historical Society & Museum, and the Shaver Lake Art Gallery located across from Ken’s Market in the Village.
Pack your bags and head up the hill to the lake. Shaver Lake, that is.
