So relaxed from an enjoyable summer break, I have struggled to find something creative to write about. I’m a bit frustrated with the mess our local and state government has created, yet as the consummate cheerleader, I am striving to get beyond that negativity and seek out all that is good and wonderful in San Joaquin County! So, reflecting on the many comments we receive on the enjoyment you, our readers get out of seeing photos and stories about local folks, it helped me focus.

On a nice evening walk I mentally reviewed the content in this issue. It made me smile. Over the past several years I have been encouraged to meet many of Stockton’s young people. We consistently hear that they leave for college and never return. That may be true for some, but is not necessarily the norm. In this issue alone, we can speak of John Gibson, a delightful, successful, young farmer, and Dana Valtierra, a Lincoln High and UOP grad with a career at F&M Bank.

And although Peggy Lindsey isn’t a twenty-something, she is the grandmother to perfect gamer Dallas Braden, who has chosen to keep Stockton as his home base. In the last issue we featured Jacqueline Ratto, a graduate of UOP who is off to a great career at the Office of Education – and also married to a local farmer from Roberts Island. How about Kevin, the owner of AVE? He was raised here and has invested his future on the Miracle Mile. And the photographer who took many of this issue’s photos? Lindsay Ortez – she too has chosen to live and work here.

In my office I’m thrilled to employ three, amazingly smart young ladies. Mari Tripp is our talented graphic designer. Janelle Meyers manages our Lincoln Center account. Anna Sass is our business manager and my daughter-in-law. She is married to my son Aaron, an eighth-grade teacher. They all went away to college and have now returned to San Joaquin County. The list goes on and on.

There truly is great value in living here. In addition to having the best weather in the world and easy access to the “city and the mountains,” we have great and amazing people, interesting family-owned businesses and generations of fascinating history. And I’m certain that these young people – as they invest their futures in San Joaquin by working and living here – will continue to add to the wealth of our great community.
Encourage someone today.
