A Glass of Romance
BY MATTHEW DAVIES
Valentine’s Day is a time for you and your special someone to get together and celebrate. Romance is in the air, it should also be in your glass. In honor of cupid and all who believe in love, I’ve decided to look at three wines that can, ahem, get your juices flowing.
Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label
Champagne is the perfect way to start a romantic evening. It enlivens the palate and is a great accompaniment to oysters and caviar. I’ve selected Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label. This wine has become synonymous with luxury.
It is Pinot Noir-based, with a small amount of Chardonnay to add to its freshness. It is pleasantly fragrant on the nose with fruit and brioche notes. It has a silky mouth-feel and a generous, fruity structure.
2001 Chateau Rieussec Sauternes
Following up the Champagne course with the perfect combination of seared foie gras and Sauternes will keep your heart racing.
I’ve chosen one of the finest Sauternes ever produced, the 2001 Chateau Rieussec. This wine received a perfect 100 points from the Wine Spectator and was the publication’s “Wine of the Year” in 2004. Sauternes is a French dessert wine from Bordeaux.
Sauternes is made from Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle grapes that have been affected by Botrytis cinerea, also known as noble rot. This causes the grapes to become partially raisined, resulting in concentrated and distinctively flavored wines.
The Rieussec flawlessly combines sweetness with acidity, with intense lemon, caramel, and honey notes. One sip of this wine will stay with you for minutes – it is incredible.
Rosenblum Désireé chocolate-infused dessert wine
To finish the dining portion of your evening, I recommend drinking dessert. The Rosenblum Désireé is a chocolate-infused wine that will leave your head swimming.
Made in the style of Port with Zinfandel grapes, the wine will remind you of eating an ethereal chocolate mousse. If you are really decadent, you can add a piece of molten chocolate cake. However you choose to enjoy it, you will have capped a perfect romantic evening – ready to go wherever the night takes you.
