Winter Wonderland
South Shore vs. North Shore. Less than twenty miles apart, they might as well be worlds apart. They do share the absolute beauty of Lake Tahoe and the majestic Sierra Nevada mountain range.
They both have their beauty, and they both have their own unique style. But if you're looking for casual comfort, hanging out with the "locals" and healthy family fun – North Shore Tahoe is a winter wonderland to experience.
Take the North Shore loop: Highway 80 then south on Highway 89 to Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows, onward to Tahoe City on the lake, east on Highway 28 to Carnelian Bay, and then looping up on Hwy 267 to Northstar-at-Tahoe, with a final stop in Truckee.
Skiing, friendly and comfortable accommodations, and world-class restaurants can all be found in this El Dorado County wonderland.
A few stops along the way:
PlumpJack Squaw Valley Inn
This comfortable and casually elegant mountain escape has an amazingly friendly and accommodating staff, with a stellar menu at their café. The wait staff and sommelier (a nice young man raised in Lodi) treat you like royalty.
The complimentary breakfast buffet for guests is way beyond ‘free breakfast with stay’. The rooms are ‘spa-like’ in comfort as well as design. Just steps away from the ski lifts of Squaw Valley and all of the great shops and restaurants in the “Village,” Plumpjack is a refreshing choice.

Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort
Spring, summer and fall golfing at Northstar is a local favorite, but it’s the mountain that has ski enthusiasts choosing this destination winter after winter. Northstar boasts 19 lifts and 92 trails on 3,000 acres. Yet the variety for families to enjoy time together goes way beyond the chairlift.
Ice skating, tubing, cross-country and snowshoe trails, and even organized geocaching are just a few of the activities to plan. Accommodations are plentiful. Shopping and dining in the village is a must.

Truckee
An event unto itself, a visit to Truckee – whether for the shopping, enjoying the many restaurants or simply for the historic experience – is worth a stop. Strolling the boardwalk, stepping into quaint shops and throwback hardware stores is a refreshing change of pace.
While many restaurants are available, a unique dining experience is awaiting at the Drunken Monkey Sushi Tapas and Sake Lounge. It’s a funny name, but a wonderful surprise, featuring excellent cuisine and an awesome atmosphere.
