Apple Hill
It is a time for family gatherings and crisp autumn days... and the aroma of freshly baked pies. Yum.
Planning a trip to Apple Hill, a growers association just outside of Placerville, will prompt you to put away those summery cottons and pull out your bulky knit sweaters. It is an October destination for a fabulous daytrip or weekend destination that can be strategically planned, or casually explored.
Organic farms with fresh fruits and vegetables are sprinkled throughout the rolling hills; quaint homes and barns have become boutique wineries. You can pick your own berries, select your own basket of apples, and find that perfect pumpkin. Strolling through the autumn-kissed orchards and breathing in the clean crisp mountain air is a keen reminder of the beautiful countryside that can be found in Northern California.
Family activities, hayrides, crafts, and corn mazes can be found at many of the stops along the Apple Hill trail. Half the fun is just stopping at each farm to see what is offered. Homemade chocolates, freshly baked pies (that you can take home and freeze) and yummy home-canned preserves are just a few of the unexpected treats you can find as you explore this popular destination.
And come December, just as you’ve finished that last piece of Thanksgiving pie, head back up to Apple Hill to choose and cut your Christmas tree. And hence, another tradition is born.

If you go:
Apple Hill has become a fall tradition for many visitors who are now extending their stay to include a night or two at one of the many quaint bed and breakfast inns in the area. More than thirteen are listed throughout El Dorado County. They are within a short driving distance to Apple Hill.
Eden Vale Inn, the newest B&B in the area, is self-described as “rustic redefined.” The beautiful natural setting surrounded by a lake, and accommodations that reflect a spa-like relaxed elegance, is only outdone by the warmth and hospitality of the owners. Closer to “the hill” is The Davies Family Inn, offering cozy log cabins, complete with wood stoves, and surrounded by lush gardens. The simple, tranquil setting is ideal for quiet romantic getaways and family gatherings, as well as a beautiful venue for outdoor weddings.
According to the El Dorado County Visitors Authority, a restaurant experience in El Dorado County can be as diverse and unique as the myriad recreational and visitor opportunities offered in the area. Whether you are in the mood for leisurely dining on French cuisine, a down-home barbeque, or possibly an evening in a Mexican cantina, or a sampling of foods of the Orient, you can find it in El Dorado County!
High-end restaurants (even though they are in rustic, historic old buildings) can be found for those who enjoy gourmet cuisine. An example is Café Mahjaic – fabulous San Francisco-style cuisine housed in a historic general store. A more casual meal can be found at The Forester Pub & Grill – or consider a tasty lunch amongst the spirits at Sequoia – rumored to be a haunted house.
Whether you stay for the weekend, eat at local restaurants or pack a tasty picnic lunch, you may very well be starting a new autumn tradition.
