Private Country Clubs
Beautiful, private golf and country clubs in San Joaquin County draw both golf members and social members. Some are just across town, others on the northern and southern edge of the county, and one up in the beautiful foothills. All are worth the drive.
Even with a beautiful new clubhouse overlooking the Delta, Stockton Golf and Country Club has maintained its timeless feel. It is an experience to walk the same fairways as some of golf’s greatest legends – such as Ben Hogan and Johnny Miller. Local golfers Bob Eastwood and Ricky Barnes are just a few of the professionals who call Stockton their home club. The club has also been host to the U.S. Open Qualifier on many occasions. The beautifully manicured course provides a lush background for all the amenities club members can take advantage of. “We continuing to grow and develop new programs and events in order to provide an atmosphere where our members and their families can enjoy their country club lifestyle,” says Bob Young, PGE, General Manager. “They enjoy the state-of-the-art fitness center, swimming pool, dining room, card rooms, pro shop, and many of the children participate in our club activities.”
Behind the big gates, Brookside Golf and Country Club serves as the gathering place for many neighborhood events and family dinners. The private country club boasts new plexi-cushion championship tennis courts that also provide enough room to hold tournaments. As for golf, the members enjoy a pristine Robert Trent Jones II golf course – host to the Canadian Tour that has been held at Brookside for the past three years. This popular tour is an opportunity for some of Stockton’s local stars, like UOP golfer Patrick Kucich, to play amongst the professionals. Brookside is also the home course for the UOP golf team. The icing on the cake for Brookside is their award-winning executive chef, Chris Isert. He pampers members with delicious cuisine, served with flair.
Along the Mokelumne River, and nestled amongst grape vineyards and cherry orchards, the Woodbridge Golf and Country Club is a serene getaway that calms the soul. Whether you are in the mood to play tennis, sit by the pool, golf, or dine with a group of fellow club friends, Woodbridge members enjoy one of the most beautiful natural settings of San Joaquin County country clubs. The three nine-hole courses run along the Mokelumne River, making this a unique setting that is envied by many.
Originally developed by Fritz and Phyllis Grupe, Greenhorn Creek Resort in Angels Camp pampers their members with fine dining, tennis, hiking trails and a spectacular golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones II. The lush green fairways, ancient oak trees, quaint cottages and spectacular views of the Gold Country are just minutes away from San Joaquin County. Whether planning a day trip, or a weekend getaway that includes wine-tasting or a stay in the cottages overlooking the golf course, Greenhorn Creek is a destination that will not disappoint.
Known for its relaxed and casual feel, Elkhorn Country Club has been a great venue for many golf tournaments and private parties. Nancy Caplin, owner for the past 30 years, has watched the course develop over the years. Named for the tule elk, Elkhorn provides golf enthusiasts a great time on and off the course.
Situated on 101 acres canopied by mature oak trees, Spring Creek Golf and Country Club brings nature to life. Winding creeks and rolling hills surround the clubhouse, allowing members to sit back and relax as they enjoy the views after a round of golf, over a card game, or with friends at a dinner party. Located east of Ripon, the ambiance of this club is a ‘San Joaquin County Best-Kept Secret.”

First Tee of San Joaquin
Future country club members may come from The First Tee of San Joaquin County, a local nonprofit that teaches youngsters from 7 to 17 the game of golf, and a whole lot more. In each eight-week course, the organization stresses nine core values: honesty, integrity, respect, courtesy, judgment, confidence, responsibility, sportsmanship and perseverance, all the while working on putting, chipping and driving. Many of these students have never set foot on a golf course, and The First Tee experience opens up a whole new world to them.
“Of course we concentrate on teaching children golf, but primarily on the life skills that go along with it,” said Betty Lou Beyer, executive director.
Weekly clinics are held for children who are interested in learning the game and what is has to offer. For more information, go to www.thefirstteesanjoaquin.org
