It’s this stunning landscape that has attracted artists to Tubac since the 1940s. Today the village brims with more than 90 galleries and boutiques. A more laidback Santa Fe, Tubac is a history buff and art lover’s paradise.

Known as the place where art and history meet, Tubac was founded in 1752 as the base for exploration into California and Arizona.

Thirty minutes south of Tucson and at an elevation of 3,200 feet, summer temperatures are pleasantly cooler in Tubac than Phoenix or Tucson.

Spend hours meandering through Tubac, perusing artist’s studios, discovering unique works of art, jewelry, clothing and native crafts. From sophisticated to whimsical, this thriving artist colony offers a feast for the eyes, and reasonable prices for the pocketbook.

Dining options abound in the village, where candlelight and white tablecloth evenings can be found alongside karaoke cantinas. For a delectable adventure sit at the chef’s table at Tubac Culinary School, and chat with the chef as he prepares your meal.

Wander into Karin Newby Gallery and Sculpture Garden and you can almost hear the lifelike bronze sculptures interacting. The magnificent replications of children playing ring-around-the-rosey and Albert Einstein sitting on a park bench seem to come alive.
Learn about Arizona’s first European settlement at Tubac Presidio State Historic Park in the middle of town. Juan Bautista de Anza, Captain of the Royal Presidio, led two overland expeditions to California from Tubac, resulting in the founding of San Francisco and its Presidio in 1776.

Tubac Golf Resort & Spa is where luxury meets the old west. In 1959 Bing Crosby bought this 600-acre ranch from the Otero family. Here he could entertain his Hollywood cronies away from the intrusive lights of L.A. Today, 98 exquisite southwest-style casitas, posadas and haciendas are situated along winding pathways throughout the verdant property.

The spacious accommodations range in size up to 800 square feet, and feature jet tubs, walk-in tile showers, beehive fireplaces and private patios. The original Otero house, with its kitchenette, lavish master bedroom and patio overlooking the golf course, can also be reserved for an especially private retreat.

Upon the unspoiled landscape set against the Tumacacori and Santa Rita mountain ranges lies Tubac Golf Resort’s 27-hole championship course. Gently rolling hills and cottonwood trees make this course fun and challenging, as well as spectacularly scenic. Hollywood noticed, and shot scenes here for the Kevin Costner movie, Tin Cup.

A peaceful walk along the paved path from your casita, and you’re in the heart of the luxurious resort, where you’ll find a variety of dining choices. A salon and world-class spa are also on the grounds, where you can choose from such exotic services as a Vichy shower treatment and Tui-Na Five Elements massage.

Whether you’re looking for an active getaway, an art expedition or a relaxing retreat, Tubac’s high desert ambience rejuvenates the soul, and is quietly awaiting your discovery.
