Catwalk Couture
According to Delta College Fashion Program Coordinator Leslie Asfour, “Many of our students have moved on to high-style fashion meccas such as San Francisco, Chicago and New York. We do have many designers that are creating home accessories, jewelry and fashion whose creations are available at local specialty shops and boutiques.”
Lisa Sysombath
Jewelry and Headband Designer
Stockton’s Lisa Sysombath is on her way to New York City! She has been invited to hold a trunk show at Henri Bendel’s legendary 5th Avenue Boutique this August.
A graduate of the Delta College Fashion Program, Lisa will be featuring her ’20s-era jewel and feather-embellished headbands at the trendy boutique. Fast becoming a sweeping new trend, Lisa’s timing couldn’t be better. These fanciful headbands have become all the rage on the catwalk, in fashion magazines, and donned by celebrities.
They add splash, a playful touch, and certainly conversation, to the otherwise simple black cocktail dress.
Lisa is also known for her own creative twist of necklaces, bracelets and belts. Made by combining vintage pieces, no two items are alike. She gets her inspirations from life experiences, books and things from the past. “But if I want something fresh, I travel,” states Lisa.
You can find her designs at City Girl in Lodi, Sun Museum in Hayward, Wish List: A Fashion Lounge in Stockton, Bendel’s in NYC, and on-line at www.etsy.com.
Cathy Lagorio
Clothing, Accessories and home decor Designer
After ten years as an elementary school teacher, Stocktonian Cathy Lagorio spent time working at C.R. Porter Home Decor in Lincoln Center. With an interest in art from early childhood, Cathy was encouraged by the owners of the Stockton store to continue pursuing her passion and interest in art. A few leftover silk pillows became the canvas for Mediterranean-inspired pillows.
Adding crystal embellishments, the pillows quickly sold – and became one of her most popular items. Now co-owner of Wish List on the Miracle Mile, Cathy utilizes her store to showcase other local artists. “All the accessories and jewelry in the store are handcrafted by very creative, local individuals,” states Kathy. Most designers, including Cathy, have attended the fashion classes at Delta College.
Clothing and Accessories Designer
Although designing clothing is his most passionate medium, a visit to New York in 2008 on the Delta College Fashion Trip inspired James Kubota to try a new medium. An unusual jewelry and bead store piqued his creativity, and encouraged him to broaden his artistic repertoire. James began by designing Asian-influenced bracelets and necklaces. His jewelry, belts, and other accessories are inspired by the movie The Seventh Samurai, modern Japanese femininity, armor, prints and texture. A diverse artist, James stated, “I see art in everything.
If you’re creative, everything can be an inspiration.” Locally involved in the Stockton Symphony and theatre at Delta College, James was raised in Lodi, and continues to pursue his artistic career in San Joaquin County.
